- The FDA has signed off on labeling for edible oils containing high levels of oleic acid to include a qualified claim of reducing coronary heart disease risk.
- The qualified claim, based on more limited evidence than an authorized claim, will state that "supportive but not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that daily consumption of about 1½ tablespoons (20 grams) of oils containing high levels of oleic acid, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” The claim will also be required to state that consumers will need to replace fats and oils higher in saturated fat and not increase daily caloric intake in order to achieve the benefit.
- Oils with the highest oleic acid content are safflower, grapeseed, rosehip and sunflower.
