After visiting Westport Innovations’ (WPRT -2.2%) Chinese joint venture, Piper Jaffray says it has more confidence in its estimates for the company thanks to significant benefits from the aggressive shift of China's truck market to natural gas. The firm reiterates its Overweight rating and price target of $45.50.

I have been a believer in WPRT and CLNE for some time, but the upbeat has been much slower than I expected. I still am enthused over the future of these and similar natgas associated companies.

The recent drop in the stock (from $48 to $22) was propelled by a misunderstanding. Analysts feared that the new arrangement between Westport and Cummins whereby Cummins would produce 15 litre engines on its own, meant that Westport could face competition from Cummins and others. Dave Demers the president of Westport explained recently that the market is too large for Westport to take it all, so Cummins is working on projects that Westport does not think is a priority. Cummins is in fact using Westport technology for the 15 litre engine with Westports approval.

This means the drop in the stock was based on a false assumption. Given that there have been in fact no negative developments for Westport while there have been several positive developments (Caterpillar, Shell), perhaps the stock will rebound to its former levels over the next few months.
