While Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) is trumpeting its entry into the high-margin core router market, currently dominated by Cisco (CSCO) and Juniper (JNPR), Cisco is asserting Alcatel's offering, the XRS 7950, is an edge router at heart. A Cisco exec notes the 7950, unlike Cisco's CRS-3, doesn't yet allow multiple boxes to function as one unit. Alcatel counters by pointing out Cisco and Juniper's hardware only recently added that feature, and many carriers don't use it. (also)
