Coal company shares soared today, perhaps thanks to a Bloomberg report describing Europe's exploding demand for coal despite tough EU restrictions on carbon emissions. Coal is now more competitive to burn in Europe than gas, and more of Europe's coal may come from the U.S. PCX +33.3%, ANR +6.4%, BTU +5.4%, ACI +3.8%, JRCC +9.8%.

Europe's dystopian decline will be good for coal (or wood).

The mad thing is that "greens" (greens just by label) don't want the plants to convert LNG back to gas, so instead of importing cheap and clean natural gas from US, we still import coal.
They are the same "greens" that are constantly opposing the Lion-Turin high speed high capacity electric railway, because to drill a tunnel is not a green thing to do (I guess they prefer trucks, noise and pollution)

Don't want to be a pessimist but after this economic slide, I would have to see some changes identified and carved in stone before I determined that a bottom had been reached and the return to value was about to occur.

I agree I have been fooled by this before in coal stocks that's why if I miss this one I miss it. I would rather be in nat gas or oil companies.

I think you have this reverse. You short ANR last year at $50 and cover in the teens. Anyone still short ANR or any of the coal names at these levels deserved to be burned.
