VMware's (VMW) purchase of DynamicOps is raising eyebrows, given DynamicOps' provisioning software works with rival platforms (unlike VMware's vCloud). Ben Kepes thinks VMware is trying to "maintain as much lock in as possible, while still admitting ... the world has moved away from total homogeneity." Whether VMware can pull off this juggling act could determine whether it can extend its leadership in virtualiztion, where a proprietary approach has worked, to cloud infrastructure software.
