Ford's (F) third entry into the hybrid segment is poised to make a dramatic impact. On the fuel efficiency front, the C-MAX Hybrid boasts a 47 mpg fuel efficiency ratings, beating the Toyota Prius V by 3 mpg. With a driving range of 500 miles utilizing both the electric motor and gasoline engine, the model aims to address one of the biggest concerns over electric vehicles. Ford plans to launch into the EV market in the fall and triple production capacity by next year.

    Wait, what?

Ford's first entry into the hybrid segment was back in 2004 with the Escape (and Mercury Mariner) Hybrid SUV. The Escape/Mariner line continued in production with regular updates through the 2012 model year with over 130,000 hybrids being produced. Production ceased with the introduction of the New Escape.

Ford has also built over 71,000 Ford Fusion / Mercury Milan / Lincoln MkZ hybrids since 2009.

Earlier this year, Ford launched the Focus Electric; and about 100 of those have been delivered to retail customers starting in May. There were also several hundred Ford Transit Connect EVs produced by Azure Dynamics, although production ceased in March as Azure Dynamics sought bankruptcy protection.

Anyway what is new and coming later this year is the Focus-based C-Max hybrid utility, the C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid utility, and the new Ford Fusion / Lincoln MkZ hybrids and Fusion Energi plug-in hubrid.

note: the summary has been corrected to say "...first entry into the the plug-in hybrid segment"; originally it simply said "...first entry into the hybrid segment..."

But yet the 47 mpg rating quoted applies to the non-plug-in C-Max hybrid, not the plug-in version.

The C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid coming in the fall is estimated at something close to 100 mpg-e in electric mode for several miles when fully charged, on top of a presumed 47 mpg in hybrid-electric mode.

They also need to address the purchase price of these vehicles. In order for them to be a success in the open market place, they need to be affordable to all.
