BP (BP +0.6%) opens modestly higher after the Sunday Times reported it is nearing a £7.4B ($15B) settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice as it seeks to draw a line under the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The deal reportedly would resolve all criminal and civil penalties, removing the overhang of a lengthy and costly legal battle.

Obama should have taken away BP America's corporate charter, in effect, using the 'corporate death penalty'. Of course, like most American politicians these days, he is SOLD OUT and would not challenge corporate power like that. BP will not learn anything from this. They will treat this settlement just as cost of doing business.

your ignorance is breathtaking. If you would have done some DD, you would know they spent pantloads of $$$ on the clean-up, ads promoting the gulf, scientific studies, etc., and many many millions on equipment that can be flown anywhere in the world in mere hours to stop the flow from ANY deep-water well, regardless of enviornment, and something like this from happening again. BP is better prepared over any other oil major to deal with this kind of thing again. Rest assured, when another major oil spill happens again (and it will, without a doubt), people will turn to BP for their painfully-learned knowledge on dealing with it.

It is time to move on, BP has done more than any oil company in the past to remedy the damage.

It is my opinion that this arrangement is best for both parties.

As this will save time and cost, whilst ensuring that wrongs can be righted, then the decision has to be the correct one. After all, who gets the benefit out of costly court cases .

BP is not the same company it was 2 years ago. Now it can proceed to being the great company it has potential to be. Of course, the tree huggers are never satisfied with anything less than the total destruction of an oil company.
