Groupon (GRPN) CEO Andrew Mason moonlights as a maitre d' at a Chicago Japanese restaurant. The reason? Mason wants to understand the challenges Groupon's thousands of daily deals partners face, and in doing so help his company develop what he calls an "operating system for local commerce," one that covers a variety of sales, booking, marketing, and payment-processing services. Google has similar ideas, and there's also PayPal (EBAY) and Square to contend with.

Or he just does it for the personal social value.

Not all small businesses are run the same way, so how can he possibly glean anything from one local neighborhood hip gig?

Most post IPO GRPN investors will be doing the same job, except that they'll need the paycheck and tips. No doubt Mason will tip them generously when he strolls in for a lavish dinner to celebrate the millions he made off of them.

Groupon, poopon; the whole concept is a joke; it's little more than a marketing con; another way for the managing shysters to peel even more pennies from the many small, naive, and desperate merchants ...
