Intel (INTC +0.6%), whose Q2 report is due this afternoon, is buying Whamcloud, a provider of advanced file system software for supercomputers. The acquisition is the latest in a series of moves demonstrating Intel's growing supercomputer ambitions. Over the last 3 months, Intel has introduced accelerator cards for high-performance computing (HPC), bought HPC interconnect tech from Cray, and announced HPC R&D contracts with the DOE.
