Rich Vogel, the executive producer of Electronic Arts' (EA -1.3%) Star Wars: The Old Republic, has reportedly left the company. Star Wars reported a stunning 400K subscriber drop for the March quarter, stoking fears EA won't recoup its massive investment in the multiplayer online game. Vogel's departure comes as EA's Bioware unit, responsible for Star Wars, conducts expected layoffs.

This game was exciting right up until the end tier content... which is arguably the most important. They failed miserable at this so it's not surprising the giant loss of subs after most players had played through the traditional story lines.

I just started the free trial see what its all about, but the missions are too hard to do alone and its impossible to stand there for 20 minutes to beg for help. Its got a nice presentation, but none of the content is from the movies so far. It doesn't look or feel like Star Wars, it feels like a sci-fi game with Star Wars' name slapped on it. I much preferred the older Star Wars Galaxies in terms of content, the original version, when I was younger hehe. The newer movies and content doesn't interest me so much because they were so horribly blasphemous against the original trilogy.

You are supposed to have a companion (Computer controlled) who will help you when you can't find a group for the harder missions.

Agreed about nothing from the original movies though, hardly any of the star wars games do intertwine with the movies. A lot of people don't know but the star wars universe is much much bigger then the 6 movies that were produced. It's almost scary...

I understand that, there are books and comics. The companion is useless. They only get you so far.

Well regardless it looks like EA might have to take a black eye on this one, they probably will not recoup their money, and there are rumors of it going completely free to play sometime in the near future, with purchasable content like in some other online games.

Yeah, it was botched because its just an MMO clone, the only thing distinctive is the voice acting. Thats it, its exactly like all other MMOs out there. MMOs I am convinced will cease to exist none of them have caught on except for World of Warcraft, that is the only one...Galaxies to an extent for a couple years, but nothing enduring as WOW.
