Entrepreneurs and business owners take note, President Obama says: "If you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." The comment, made at a speech the President gave at an appearance in Roanoke, Virginia recently, has gone viral, with the internet swamped with images of the President telling innovators such as the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs and others "they didn't build that." Kevin Costner's famous line in "Field of Dreams," parodies Obama: "If you build it... we'll still say you didn't really build it."

I second this, a highly profitable one where I can take 3-4 months off a year to stay at my brand new cottage in Fiji.

Except that's not the whole quote.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

i.e. success doesn't exist in a vacuum. How's that not true? What would be of the Internet if the DOD hadn't developed it. GPS from DOD. Research grants. Paved roads and subsidies for airports, railroads, etc. to move goods. The people who have found success in this country didn't do it alone.

Its a silly remark that should have been worded differently for sure, he should have said if you have a business someone helped you along the way to get there, or you weren't alone in building that business.

It shouldn't be a headline and people should look at the whole thing and infer a meaning. Unfortunately he said it and now it's fair game to twist whatever way people want.

It gets not better with the whole quote as it shows a mindset and a Pres that doesn't get it. The commitment, the risk the pain of starting a business and trying to make it go. And most fail.

I guess if an entrepreneur cannot take credit for starting a business then the rest of can take no credit for anything. But Obama can take credit for a lot of things and no responsibility for problems.

    Narcissist.

Obama comment is perfectly valid when you look at the big picture.

    1) The point is that there is a supportive cultural and economic infrastructure increases the probability for more and a wider variety of businesses.

    2) When you look at ancient civilizations, in the short term the ones with good infrastructure were able to do more. If you compare the Romans versus the English at around 100 AD. The Romans had a vibrant economy for their time, indoor plumbing and some sort of reasonable life for even the worse off. Whereas the English were savages who painted their bodies with colored dirt.

    3) In our country, no one is going to locate a modern semiconductor fab in Louisiana or Moantana. There simply isn't the educational and technical resources to accomplish this plus the required supply chain and the support contractors are too far away. If you look at it deeper, there are more semiconductor fabs in the "socialist" countries of Europe then there are in the US red states.

    4) Obama fully aware of what it takes to build a vibrant economy because I'm sure he studies the classified CIA reports on Russia. Publicly Russia is a basket case. Russia's biggest problem is demographic.
Putin has been personally spear heading several manufacturing initiatives which have turned out to be failures. He has been trying to jump start a Russian aviation industry, but the with the unfortunate crash in Indonesia and the rise of Brazil in the small airliner league it's tough. Putin is also trying to build up a vibrant middle class, but when you have an oligarchy basically calling the shots it's tough.

    5) The other great thing about the US is the rule of law and the fact that you don't have to lay on the bribes at the city, county and local level for the most part.

    6) One other unappreciated thing is that we have very strong federal law enforcement agencies. Just look at our neighbor Mexico.

Finally, people who whine about the US economy, the business climate, laws, so called socialism are clueless. If you look at the top 30 countries by GDP, in some way or another you will find that in the aggregate, the taxes are higher, gun laws are much stricter and business regulation is worse. A government to run a great country like the US costs money. If you don't like it, leave. Guys like Marc Faber left and now lives in Thailand. You can be sure that he has to support an entourage plus rain money down on the local authorities in order to live in the comfort he is use to.

You are making a mistake in your logic of where this great country came from and the origins of our industry. Did you ever consider that people built the businesses and farms that paid the taxes to build the infrastructure? Money did not come from a government that dropped onto this earth from Mars.

In the chicken and egg debate it is people who have created this country not government. Government evolved out of the peoples' will. To say otherwise turns on its head the history of this country and the Declaration of Independence and other founding artifacts and beliefs.

That is why Obama's view and mindset is not valid except in centrally planned economies who think they are the mother of all creativity. That would be the USSR which is now a shattered mess and the PRC to a lesser extent.

You don't get it. This is about marginalizing success, penalizing success. This is about rewarding mediocrity and subsidizing failure. Because every person on the government dole is another vote for more of the same.

The Founding Fathers believed that the individual and the inalienable rights of the individual made this country great. Obama would have you believe that the government is what makes this country great.

The Founding Fathers strove to protect the individual from the government. Obama would have you believe that the "common good" supersedes consideration of individual thought and individual responsibility.

The Founding Fathers formed a republic based on leaders elected by qualified voters, to protect us from "democracy". Obama would turn us into a direct democracy, rule by the masses, where votes are bought, and leadership is replaced by polls, referendums and propositions.

This is what happens when as a child your mentor is none other than Frank Marshal Davis!

Mr. Davis was a direct influence on young Barry as he was called growing up.
Mr. Davis, a card carrying communist and anti colonialist is exactly what we have today in Mr. Obama!
This line of thought should come as no surprise to anyone who has done even a little scratching below the surface of the media / Hollywood propaganda with regard to any form of proper vetting of Mr. Obama in 2008!

At least the president is no longer hiding his anti American and anti capitalism views anymore!

The question now for our republic becomes,
are you going to go along with the transformation that was started in 2008?
    Or,
are you going to stand up for the principles of this mighty republic and restore the respect and might that has been so tarnished by this progressive / socialist administration?
This is the most important election of this republics history!
Let us not fail her because we chose to sit down!

    God Bless The Virtuous

Whether or not the human condition applies, (which says that you've been influenced, affected, helped and hindered by your environment and all that exists in it,) Obama is using this idea to say, "Pay more taxes" because we'll give it to everyone else that helps you along the way. Don't we pay property taxes and income taxes to create the infrastructure and give teachers the jobs he's lauding here? This is more self serving crap from the propagandist-in-chief.

Don't blame Obama. He's the victim of affirmative action. Poor dope believes government hands out everything to everyone. What do you expect from a guy who gets a Nobel Peace Prize for just showing up?
