Duke Energy (DUK +0.3%) says it will accelerate the retirement of one North Carolina coal-fired power plant previously set to close in 2013, plus the utility's only coal-fired unit in South Carolina at the end of the summer. The company will shutter its 316-megawatt Cape Fear coal-fired plant located near Moncure, N.C., and its 177-MW H.B. Robinson Unit 1 coal-fired plant, located near Hartsville, S.C., will be retired October 1, 2012. Both plants are run by DUK subsidiary Progress Energy.
