DuPont (DD -0.1%) could have to pay up to $235M for programs that monitor the onset of diseases linked to the C8 chemical among Mid-Ohio Valley residents. The committee was formed in 2005 as part of a settlement to a lawsuit that alleged that water supplies in Ohio and West Virginia were contaminated by DuPont.

DuPont plans to stop making and using C8 by 2015. That should make the tort lawyers jobs a lot easier.

The c8 is used in the manufacture of teflon and gore-tex.

PFOA (C8) has been detected in the blood of more than 98% of the general US population in the low and sub-parts per billion range.
