NTT DoCoMo (DCM), Fujitsu, and NEC have formed a JV (majority-owned by Fujisu) that will develop 3G/4G baseband chips. The JV, which aims to reduce the companies' dependence on baseband leader Qualcomm (QCOM), comes 4 months after a partnership that also featured Samsung and Panasonic unraveled. Qualcomm and its giant R&D budget have weathered a few similar challenges in the past.
