The worst drought in over 50 years is getting worse, according to the Drought Monitor. Nearly two-thirds of the country was under some level of drought as of July 31, with extreme drought covering about 32% of the Midwest, and about 5% of that region falling under exceptional drought conditions - the most dire classification that results in widespread crop losses and shortages of water. Crop condition ratings for corn and soybeans have fallen to their lowest levels since 1988 and continue to propel prices to new all-time highs.
