Research In Motion (RIMM -0.7%) underperforms after Jefferies' Peter Misek reiterates an Underperform. Misek isn't entirely negative: he thinks Samsung is considering licensing BlackBerry 10 (ed: Samsung already supports 3 platforms, do they need a 4th?) or buying RIM, though he doesn't consider the latter likely before BB10 launches. But he estimates a licensing deal will provide a $0.36/share EPS boost at best, and is unenthusiastic about BB10 after trying a developer preview.

Devloper preview device doesn't even show off the flow interface from what I understand. Does this guy even know that?

The dev preview lets devs test apps on real hardware.

The Dev Alpha is a hardware device that can run apps built for BB10. In fact it does not contain a full working version of BB10 at this time. While no tech reviewer so far would make the mistake of doing a BB10 review using this device, this analyst appears to think he can do better than most technology analysts.

I will agree on one level, and that is his estimated on licensing revenues. It appears that MSFT is in the 10.00 to 15.00 range for Windows Phone 8 licensing, so RIMM would need to be competitive with those levels. At his projections from a Samsung BB10 licensed device, that would be about $200 million additional annual revenue.

I still don't see why people are saying that RIMM will do licensing. They never stated that.

Did you bother reading the full quote?

It is in hte context of "We don't have the economy of scale to compete against the guys who crank out 60 handsets a year. We have to differentiate and have a focused platform. "

RIMM already said they want fewer models available at any one time in the past. ANd he said it again here. There intent is not to have 60 models. So, the quote everyone is taking as the only thing that was said is a highly unlikely outcome.

I gave you that link to explain "why people are saying that RIMM will do licensing". The comments on that article are interesting too. Also, Heins did not state RIMM would not pursue licensing.

When did Peter Misek give a sell rating on RIMM? Let us examine his history of calls on RIMM. Did he tell people to sell near the top? Or was he recommending a buy like all the others? I would like to know.

Oh, I found a Peter Misek buy recommendation with a target of $80 from March of 2011. Great call, Peter. Now I know why you're considered such an expert on RIM.

wow, $225! It's like Amazon over priced and over speculated.
