It's not just Sprint that's now selling the iPhone 4S at a $50 discount: Apple (AAPL) has instructed its retail stores to match Sprint's pricing when asked to do so. Apple has already guided for iPhone 4S sales to be weak ahead of a refresh (expected next month), and it looks as if the company is hungry to clear inventory. (earlier)

What retailer – ever, throughout history – has NOT been hungry to clear inventory of a soon-to-be-outmoded SKU? But Apple is well-advised to do it quietly, as usual, not with some kind of big "August Madness!" clearance sale. Demand is still there, just not as high.
