Is Oracle (ORCL) quietly trying to kill the open-source MySQL database? Oracle, which gained control over MySQL's distribution through the Sun acquisition, has been withholding test cases for bug fixes from developers, and has pulled MySQL's revision history. Oracle gets a large chunk of its profits from the proprietary Oracle Database, and had to provide concerned regulators with assurances MySQL would be safe to win approval for the Sun deal. Microsoft and IBM also provide databases that compete with MySQL

Well as a developer, I've worked with both products and unless money is an issue, I would always go with Oracle hands down. People always talk about MySQL, JBoss, etc as being "free", but this isn't exactly true i.e. you need to invest in people, monitoring infrastructure, etc once you pick a product. Additionally, enterprise level customers of JBoss/MySQL would always pay for support anyways, because imagine if there's some unforeseen catastrophe, they would rather be able to call someone pronto rather than relying on some kind souls on the support message boards, and if the product you are working on is somewhat confidential, sometimes you can't share too many details and then the message boards become useless.

Operations aside, Oracle Exadata is one amazing tech. Please wake me up when MySQL has something similar.
