Electronic Arts (EA) PopCap mobile games unit, acquired last year for a hefty sum, is laying off 50 employees and re-thinking expansion plans. PopCap blames a shift in game-playing to "freemium" titles - many of PopCap's hits, such as Plants vs. Zombies, have been paid titles. EA has already said PopCap is struggling to earn the payouts tied to the acquisition, and the layoffs make it less like they'll do so. Analysts have been worried about EA's limited freemium exposure.
