Though the companies keep saying the right words, Cisco's (CSCO) partnership with EMC is fraying, sources tell Reuters. The companies' VCE JV hasn't turned a profit, and Cisco has reportedly discussed acquiring an EMC storage rival (ed: Are they looking at NetApp? Or a startup such as Nutanix?). EMC, meanwhile, has thought of buying or partnering with a Cisco networking rival Also, Cisco had a $750M deal to acquire startup and long-term threat Nicira, only to see EMC's VMware (VMW) outbid them.

  • Let's also not forget the partnership EMC recently signed with Lenovo to sell their server line. It can be seen as insurance of the Converged Infrastructure strategy in case Cisco pulls the plug on VCE and takes it's network AND compute (read: server) platform with it.
