Apple (AAPL) roundup: 1) John Gruber and others speculate the iPad Mini won't be announced in tandem with the next iPhone during the latter's (rumored) Sep. 12 launch, given Apple's preference to keep the media spotlight on one device. 2) iPad Mini case pictures are leaking. They feature a small hole that many think could be for a rear microphone. 3) Piper's Gene Munster notes 75% of the non-iPad tablet market is controlled by 7" tablets, which the Mini would target. Agreed. It may be too soon for the iPad Mini. Also it might just be too many new toys for a September announcement. They might get more media bang for their buck if it comes out a month or so after iPhone 5.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. What happened to Apple's famous secrecy? Before we didn't even know what was going to be announced. Now we have pictures even before the announcement.

For what it's worth, I believe that the iPad mini will not be launched together with the iPhone 5. It doesn't make sense to have the attention on 2 devices at the same time from a marketingpoint of view.

This isn't the first time. There were leaked photos and cases for what people thought was to be the iPhone 5 that turned out 1) to be the iPhone 4S and 2) not to look like the photos. Don't believe all the rumors. A major event is hard to hide, as Apple has to make arrangements, even if it's on their own campus.

There are other signs, of course, especially the price cuts to the iPhone 4S. Contrary to what some seem to think, the price cuts are are not to "clear out inventory," as it's likely that the iPhone 4S will still be sold. Instead, they could gradually lead into the new price for the iPhone 4S--probably $99-149, so that those who buy today won't feel like they've been robbed when the price drops when the next iPhone (whatever it will be called--my bet is "iPhone," like the "iPad;" for a while, it will be "the new iPhone") comes out.

Gruber et al do make a good point (I think) that Apple is unlikely to announce two major products at the same time, as one would be lost in the other's coverage. Expect an early October announcement of new iPods and maybe a smaller iPad, just in time for the holidays. That's been the way Apple's done it in the past, as iPod sales are very seasonal.

Yes. Shortly after I posted, I read somewhere on the Internet, forgotten where (and you know how reliable the Internet is as a source of info - tongue firmly in cheek) that only the iPhone 5 will be launched in Sept and the smaller iPad in October.
