Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) is asking for more time to drill in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska, as delays threaten to end its plans this year before they even get off the ground. Shell filed a request with the Interior Department late last week requesting about two more weeks to drill beyond the U.S. government's Sept. 24 deadline based on estimates of when ice will begin reforming.

I'll be curious to see how the Interior Department responds to Shell's request (I'm thinking negatively, but hopefully, I'm wrong..)

As a Shell stockholder I see no reason to extend the season and increase the risk, The venture is already betting a good portion of the company assets against the risk of spill they know they can't clean up. Paul Schutt / Chicago

It's all over the news wires that there is record amount of artic ice melting this summer.

Since ice reflects sunlight more than water, the lack of ice should heat up the ocean more depending on the currents. I would guess perhaps an extension is possible.
