Intel (INTC) has opened an R&D facility in San Diego, the home turf of mobile chip giant Qualcomm (QCOM), as it steps up its smartphone/tablet processor efforts. Intel has already listed 30 openings for 3G/4G engineers in the area - the company probably wants to integrate its 3G/4G modem tech, obtained by acquiring Infineon's mobile chip unit, with its Atom mobile processors, so as to better compete with Qualcomm's integrated Snapdragon processors. They are going to develop a chip that runs only on the energy developed by body heat. It will give a nerd the excuse to go out on a date if he wants to get the performance needed to surf the net.

Wow, a company with a rock solid management team, a lot of cash, and has proven itself to be capable of being an industry leader is doing what it needs to in order to lead in a neighboring field to its core competency?

    You don't say...

Intel is the kind of large company that needs to run decisions thru several levels before making a move. So maybe it is not a prompt as a startup, but watch it work as it arrives at a solution.
I'm not just a fanboy of Intel, I used to work there.
Their big issue now is how to dominate portable me like they did in the good old Wintel days. Well, maybe not so much– Microsoft is not the beastie that it was when PC's were the big news.

I think a majority of these positions will go to people on H1B visas.

Hmph– LOOK how funds for education are cut, existing graduates are loaded with $100K debts and few if any job prospects, universities raise tuition fees and cut essential classes, then dilute prospects for qualified professionals by favoring H1B job applicants, THEN tell me how the USA is supposed to grow its way to prosperity.
