Wal-Mart (WMT +0.7%) plans to test iPhone-powered self checkouts at select stores, according to a report aired on CNBC. Besides speeding up lines quite a bit, if the company decides to roll out the option on a national level it could cut its processing costs depending in part on the type of payment vendor it chooses to partner with.

Hmm. Down here in our part of the world, at least, Walmart totally gave up on self-checkout, even with the standard scanners. Maybe they're banking on iPhone owners being more facile with technology... and more honest (?) than the general population?

What ever happened to the idea a year or so ago about simply throwing everything into your shopping cart and simply exiting the store where a scanner picked up everything automatically and charged it to your Visa or other bank account?

I work at Walmart and believe me when I say that t is coming! Now we have a scanner that you only need to be about 20 feet from the product for it to scan every item that you are wanting it to scan at the moment! For example: You take the scanner out to the tire and lube garage and just walk close the tires and it picks up every tire in the garage! Each tire has a sticker with a gps type locater in them so I think that in time it could come to the "walk out" type check out! Of course...like the stickers that get lost, how hard will it be for dishonest customers to take the sticker off?
