Mr. Draghi "has no problems with purchases (of short-term bonds)," says MEP Jean-Paul Gauzes after hearing closed-door testimony from the ECB chief today. "He said the ECB wouldn't be contravening the treaty in doing so." The remarks - if true - add further confirmation to the idea the ECB is set to act and that action will be centered on short-term (2-3 year) paper.

Draghi can talk and jawbone all he wants, which he certainly has done a great deal of lately. But whether or not the countries that really count, being the northern EU countries will allow him to act is very much open to question.

Already being priced into the markets - care to guess how much more? The EUR/USD maintained relative strength on this news, which might make sense if one considers that easing on both sides of the pond weakens EUR and USD.

Because of the balkanization of the EMU banking system, deposit flight and liquidity shortages I believe unstrerilized bond purchases will reduce rates but at the expense of price stability and deferring needed reforms Austerity is not something dreadful as actually it's rebuilding dysfunctional economies created by politicians with costs today and benefits tomorrow. Draghi will actively fund fiscal deficits, interfere with reforms and prove Weidmann's dire warnings correct. Draghi is much like an unethical physician prescribing morphine to politicians who do not wish to feel the poular pain of unsustainable and irresponsible policies.
