Ending months of speculation, Rio Tinto (RTP +1.8%) confirms its plans to swap its shares in Ivanhoe Mines for a direct stake in Mongolia’s Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold project, which is 66% owned by Ivanhoe. Oyu Tolgoi is one of the world's largest undeveloped copper deposits, and Chinalco (ACH) is considering a stake as well.
