The vultures are starting to circle. While BP (BP) reportedly talks with Apache (APA) over $10B of asset sales, Exxon Mobil (XOM) and possibly Chevron (CVX) have supposedly approached the White House to get unofficial approval for potential bids for BP, while PetroChina (PTR) hints at an asset purchase or JV.

In 1876, Oil was discovered in Pico Canyon near LA. and became the Pacific Coast Oil Co. which got gobbled up by Standard oil, which got gobbled up by Chevron which got gobbled up with Texaco (who had just grabbed Getty Oil) to form the Texas Fuel Co. which got gobbled up with Unical to form Texaco-Chevron which then became just Chevron which now wants to gobble up British Petro. A truly volatile food chain to say the least.
