Apple (AAPL +0.8%) roundup: 1) A U.S. appeals court upholds a decision to toss a $625.5M 2011 jury verdict against Apple related to a patent suit from private Mirror Worlds. 2) Piper's Gene Munster thinks iPhone 5 sales, expected to begin on Sep. 21, could reach 10M just by the end of September. 3) Needham's Charlie Wolf believes U.S. education-market PC sales fell 14% Y/Y in Q2, while iPad sales to the market totaled nearly 1M. He considers this proof the latter is cannibalizing the former. (iPhone event)

According to IDC, Apple enjoys an even larger market share in k12 education, due to their dedicated sales team who can make large district-level sales.

Apple probably still has a slight lead at the college/uni level, but definitely less than K12 since most institutions are 'byod'.

I happened to be visiting a large university shortly after the ipad was released and took and inventory of approx 150 students studying in the student union. Approx 100 students were using an ipad(!) and the rest had MacBooks. There was one student who wasn't using her Macbook but was reading a Kindle. Almost all the students appeared to have an iphone or ipod as well, although some students did have Droids.

    1) The patents themselves weren't overturned. Expect more lawsuits from Mirror Worlds.
    2) The actual quote is this: "Munster believes Apple could sell a total of between 6 million and 10 million new iPhones in the final week of September, barring *potential supply issues*" Those last 3 words are pretty important, along w the range btwn 6 & 10. I will be very happy if AAPL sells 10M new iPhones, but unless Gene buys 2 or 3 million himself I doubt it will happen.
    3) A 14% drop only represents 265,000 units (as a reminder of how relatively small the ed market is).

I like Gene Munster, but it's hard to see him as any
    more than a cheerleader lately.
