EMC has begun showing off Project X, a flash memory-based storage system developed by recently-acquired XtremIO. Project X, due to begin shipping in early 2013, contains an advanced software feature set that includes thin provisioning, deduplication, and VMware API support. The hardware arrives as IBM digests flash storage vendor Texas Memory, and speculation swirls that NetApp, H-P, or Dell will make a bid for one of the remaining independent vendors, such as Violin Memory or Nimbus.
