A Wi-Fi version of Amazon's (AMZN +2.1%) 8.9" Kindle Fire HD will sell for $299 (well below the 9.7" iPad), while a 7" model will go for $199. The latter arrives on Sep. 14, but the former won't ship until Nov. 20. Amazon is also rolling out a 4G version of the 8.9" model that costs $499, but offers 250MB/month of downloads and 20GB of cloud storage for just $50/year, undercutting carrier data plans. Amazon's Whispersync tech is being extended to games and audiobooks. No smartphone was unveiled. (live blog) (more)

Wow, how creative amazon is!!! Lets mimic what apple has already mastered and hope we can price it a few bucks cheaper and people will buy it.

Will do nothing more than possibly draw a few new people to using amazon prime for shopping.

Save your money and invest in apple on a pullback.

No matter how anyone spins this, more sharks are entering the fray. I'm curious what Apple's margins will be in '13 once all the competitors have their products flooding the market.

I would not want to live in a world where Apple had absolutely no competition. That said, APPL is a much better stock than AMZN from a fundamentals point of view IMO.

Anything is better than AMZN from a stock ownership point of view. If you want to own a retailer with moat and more down-to-earth valuations, WMT is the one to get

DLTR is good, but seems a bit run up to me. Although then again, WMT has had a fantastic breakout since the naysayers said to sell it when the mexican bribery scandal broke

They can't hold WMT back for long.
DLTR just split and there seems to be a delayed reaction to that. Looking forward to their next earnings report.

250mb/month? I guess they aren't counting on people actually using it.

50 bucks a year for a 4G data plan is great. 250MB a month is enough to do some casual surfing and email. I'm sure there will be some upgrade options if you want more data.

I wonder what carrier provides the service? 4G coverage is spotty even with someone like Verizon and I wonder if the tablet will do 3G if 4G isn't available in the area.

What is the consensus on when AMZN will split, and at what ratio?
