Positive comments from Piper Jaffray are helping GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT +8.5%) shoot higher today. Piper thinks sapphire panels manufactured using GT's equipment could carry a price premium relative to Corning's (GLW) Gorilla Glass in mobile device applications. GT has been struggling to cope with weak demand from its core LED and solar equipment markets.

"GT has been struggling to cope with weak demand from its core LED and solar equipment markets."

Absolutely not true. By all reports, GTAT's customers have been snapping up its crystallization furnaces, with their gross margins still above 40%, and their backlog still strong.

GT's sales fell 28% Y/Y during the June quarter, and new orders only totaled $13.8M.

Thank you for explaining from what you inferred that statement. If you had listened to the most recent earnings call, you'd have known that GTAT's revenues have been historically "lumpy," and that the CEO hasn't lowered his guidance for the full calendar year of slightly higher revenues than last year. You would also know that GTAT has the ability to deliver on that guidance because of its huge order backlog. I have not seen any evidence anywhere that GTAT is "struggling."

GTAT has a strong management team that's constantly looking forward while smartly managing their day to day business. As equipment maker to the solar industry it will continue to grow as the industry inevitably will grow in the years to come. It's diversification into the sapphire furnace business has broadened its production foundations. It's LED business could expand into the mobile device arena. All this makes GTAT more than just a solar player. It is positioning itself to be a dominant competitor in the solar, sapphire, LED, growth areas in the years to come. As it's P/E
expands more in line with its growth rate the stock price should follow.
