"People got a bit too excited about the idea the euro-area was going to break up and forgot that the U.S. has a whole load of problems of its own," says David Bloom, HSBC's global head of currency strategy. Investors are now shifting focus back to the dollar, and raising their forecasts for the euro.

    The first instance of an all-out state budget crisis and subsequent state/federal standoff over a bailout will see a repeat of February/March, but it will be the dollar going for the ride of its life this time. As in Europe, when investors' focal points shift, it will take everyone by surprise. Get to know the 10th amendment of the US Constitution, we're going to be talking about it a lot.
