The Pentagon has refrained from authorizing a plan for operational testing of Lockheed Martin's (LMT) F-35 program, Reuters reports, with officials expressing frustration at the pace of development in a "very painful" review on Friday. Of particular concern are the problems afflicting the F-35 helmet, which is being developed by  Rockwell Collins (COL) and Israel's Elbit Imaging (EMITF).

Another example of penny wise, pound foolish. The Pentagon and Congress killed the construction program for a plane that actually worked and worked well - the F-22 - in order to build the supposedly cheaper, one-size-fits-all F-35 that obviously doesn't work well, and often doesn't work at all. And, with all the snags the program has hit, the F-35 might actually end up costing more than the F-22 would have. Your genius government at work.

The F-22 is a good plane but it can't fit all the roles that the F-35 can.

Frankly, I think the development pace of the F-35 has been quite good, given how much software engineering talent the program has needed.

Sigh..... Iran isn't gonna bomb itself. Romney's made some promises to Israel that he needs to keep.

The helmet is the core of the HUD in modern fighters.

This helmet is more than just a helmet its a critical component of the weapon system enabling off axis firing of missiles. PS don't blame Lockheedjust like the engines this is a Government Furnished Item (GFE). Any delays caused by the government in furnishing GFE enable LMT to file a claim for compensation for the effect of the delay on the company and its subcontractors.
