Home Depot (HD) plans to shut all seven of its big box outlets in China and cut 850 jobs, leading to a $160M charge in Q3. "China is a do-it-for-me market, not a do-it-yourself market, so we have to adjust," the company says, although the country's slowing economy is also not helping. Home Depot will now focus on online and specialty stores in China. (PR)

Most people in China don't have cars and even if they do have a car, it's not like in N.A. where consumers can load up their supplies in their F150 Ford pickup. Furthermore, people in China don't have a garage to store their tools and a work area to complete projects.

And most men in China are 'baby-sat' by their parents and wouldn't know how to use tools anyways.

The baby sat comment while may be true is quite a cultural slur. There's positive and negative aspects to all cultures including the greatest nation on earth.

I have spent my whole adult life around chinese and what I tell you is true. Chinese kids are excellent at studying and participating on the internet. In terms of being indpendent and 'doing things on their own', I would rank them near the bottom.

Culturally, someone from Russia or Poland would be more interested in learning to renovate and repair than someone from China.

Nobody else wants to say it, so I will. "If Home Depot management really had their fecal matter in a pile, they would have researched whether of not the Chinese are keen on the idea of "Do it yourself" or "Do it for me" long before they sunk a couple hundred million in the 7 stores. Just plain stupid!

WOW. After opening 7 stores and sinking a few hundred million they now realize that China is a do-it-for-me market. A cheap maybe couple hundred thousand dollar review by any half decent consulting firm would have revealed that. Same is true for India in case HD has any aspirations there.

Maybe the staff in charge of this HD venture in China was run by people who were taught not to stereotype, therefore, they truly believed that all cultures behave in the same way and would welcome HD as do Americans.
