Microsoft (MSFT) is handing out free Surface tablets, Windows Phone 8 devices, and Windows 8 PCs to its 90K+ employees in an effort to stoke interest in its latest products. Separately, Microsoft confirms the Windows RT version of Office 2013 will be provided for free, and will arrive at some point between November and January. But the company also cautions it will lack some of the advanced features found on the Windows 8 Pro version of Office won't be included.

  • So how much are they paying Nokia for 90K Lumina's?

Is that a 1million dollar sale? equaling 3% of sales for the 4th quarter as compared to the luminas best ever quarter at 4million sold?

Do not think MSFT will be the only large corporation that starts issuing this ecoshpere to its employees.

  • As a Microsoft employee, I had one simple reaction when I got the e-mail yesterday (from SteveB, no less) telling us that we would be getting these devices....

    "Woo hooooo!"

  • Who are you, the IRS? :)

    I honestly don't know. I expect a "full details" and "here's how we'll do this" follow-up e-mail sometime soon.

  • I was there for 19+ years and received a free Widows Phone 7. In fact I'm using it to write this comment. Although no longer with MSFT I still love the company and its direction. Steve B and Kevin Turner are the ones holding the company back. While I loved the free phone and would have loved this most recent perk, I do think a larger impact could be had by generating greater interest in the public and especially developer communities. The Windows phone is a superior smart phone to other phone platforms and I anticipate surface will be too. Yes I've used all 3 (RIM is dead). People don't buy a windows phone because of the minimal apps available for it. That and very poor, ineffective and relatively nonexistent advertising. It's not always the better product that sells, especially in this well connected world we live in. MSFT needs to fix this to get back on top.

  • Good move Microsoft! Now let's see if any of the Fortune 1000 will shift to the Windows 8 & WP8. I have been using Nokia Lumia 900 since April and love it, will be looking forward to look at the L920. Go Nokia!

  • I switched to Windows Phone from iPhone, and absolutely love it. It's easy, it works, and it's fast. There are a few apps that I can't find, and it's aggravating when I see apps that I want advertised for IPhone and Android, but I'm happy. I was with Microsoft almost ten years - I didn't get a new Surface from management yet, but then I was NEVER a steveb fan. He's where he is because he's a FOB.
