Pfizer (PFE +0.8%), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +0.8%) and NovaDigm are all working on experimental vaccines to treat a powerful staph infection that kills more people in the U.S. than skin cancer and costs as much as $8B a year to treat. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, has long been a dangerous infection in hospitals and nursing homes, and is now finding its way into daycare centers, schools and prisons. It's likely to be a challenge however, as the vaccines are years away from possible approval and two other drug companies have already tried and failed.
