The WSJ profiles Harley-Davidson (HOG) as an example of how U.S. manufacturers have become much more flexible so that they can adjust to the modulations of the global economy. Harley-Davidson has consolidated its Pennsylvania factory, introduced automation, cut jobs, and makes use of "casual" workers who come and go as needed.
