The NHTSA steps up its investigation of Toyota's (TM) Corolla and Matrix cars because of a possible defect that could cause the engines to stall, not start or shift gears harshly. Toyota confirmed the probe, which began Aug. 18, but declined to provide details or specify whether a recall will be necessary.
