Supermarket chains increase their focus on winning back healthy-oriented shoppers who have turned to Whole Foods Markets (WFM -0.5%) and farmers markers. Companies including Supervalu (SVU -0.2%), Kroger (KR +0.1%), and Safeway (SWY -0.7%) plan to introduce new organic food brands under private labels. Industry data shows that demand for organic food is still strong in the U.S. with 78% of families including the category as part of their shopping strategy.

Tell us something we don't know.

It is an expanding pie and Whole Foods will have the biggest slice for quite some time.

There is no chance this statistic is accurate. With the growing number of unemployed/underemploy... be employed people in this country, I highly doubt 78% of families are paying up to buy organic.

I did when I was out of work!! Depends on where you live and how big your family is. Easier for those w/out kids -- enough broccoli for one dinner no more than $1.50! Also, buying vegs in season is cheaper, and grains/products in bulk. I go into a conventional supermarket and see food just as expensive, some of the organic frozen meals even more expensive than in health food stores. As consumer demand increases I think prices for healthier food has come down. Whole Foods as a stock: a Keeper.

and since Trader Joe's just had the peanut butter salmonella scare I'll bet Whole Foods becomes more popular still.
