IBM will reportedly unveil Project Sparta, a big data-focused addition to its new PureSystems hardware line, on Oct. 9. Details are scant, but the product sounds like a potential rival to Oracle's (ORCL) Big Data Appliance, a high-end system aimed at a booming market for solutions that analyze huge corporate datasets. Like Oracle's high-end hardware, IBM's PureSystems gear combines server, storage, and networking capabilities in one costly box.
