Completing repairs necessary to restart Duke Energy's (DUK +0.4%) Crystal River nuclear power plant in Florida could cost as much as $3.43B, according to an independent study. DUK is still considering whether to repair the plant or shut it down permanently, Progress Energy Florida president Alex Glenn says.

  • The independent study helps confirm what they already know--CR is history, and not a pleasant one.

  • How much are the estimated shut-down costs? If these costs exceed the repair costs, Duke should do the repair. If not, it should shut the nuclear plant down.

  • If Romney gets in as President , they WILL get an extension to operate until 2036 if they make the 2.5B in repairs.. Hope they can trim that cost down though... but spread out over 22 years is a whole lot better then closing it in 2 years!
