Backing up a May rumor, Digitimes claims Google (GOOG) wants to launch Nexus smartphones in partnership with with several Android OEMs at once - Samsung, LG, Sony, and HTC are named as likely candidates. Expanding the size of the Nexus line both helps Google promote an unmodified version of Android (most sales involve phones with custom UIs), and keep partners from worrying if Motorola Mobility is getting preferential treatment.

I have to wonder why they would not give Motorola preferential treatment? Although I guess it does spread Android and Google to more phone and tablet platforms, which is a good thing, but it really does hurt Motorola.

Motorola is set to lose 400 to 600 million dollars in the 3rd quarter and more than a billion dollars in 2012. At some point after (Christmas) the first of the year Google will announce that all phone design, engineering manufacturing left will cease at Motorola, and all staff let go in the course of six months. Motorola is dead.
