Sources say Yahoo (YHOO) was the mysterious counterbidder that derailed Google's (GOOG) $550M acquisition of Yelp last December. Yahoo came in with an offer $200M richer, but that didn't happen either because Yelp's management team refused to work for Yahoo.

    I believe these owners of Yelp are the same founders of PayPal so maybe they wanted growth rather than a sell out. Interesting that the linked article refers to the Ugliest Girl at the Dance. Imagine Bartz reading that!

    If this story is true, its indeed a sad reflection on Yahoo. Perhaps they ought to change their name to Yikes!
