BHP Billiton (BHP) plans to scale back production of iron ore in Australia, and has begun to discuss re-deployment and job losses with workers at its iron ore operations in the remote western Pilbara region, WSJ reports. BHP's move to shelve expansion plans and lay off workers continues the mining industry's retrenchment theme. (earlier)

    This is not new news, and is already priced in. BHP could shift mining production to other higher demand commodities.
