As the JPMorgan (JPM) earnings conference call begins (webcast here, presentation here), shares have given back their premarket pop following the headline beat (though they are up 22% over the last 90 days). Banks are in the business of making loans and earning a spread, yes? Total loans and net interest margin both declined over the quarter.

    We used to think so, but that thinking is so post-modern.

     

    The post-post-modern thinking is that banks make their money hiring out-of-work politicians and speculating in oil futures.
