Amazon (AMZN) says it will make a big push to see its Kindle e-readers and tablet computers be the device of choice in schools as it tries to cut into an established lead that Apple has carved out in the education market. The company has set up a program to help teachers and administrators set up classroom accounts with Facebook and full Internet access blocked.

Amazon has no chance unless they give everything away for free, including content. Apple's early sales in the 1990's were fueled through the educator-buy channel and through school purchases. They are light years ahead at marketing within this segment. I informally monitor the current trend within this channel, and it is very clear that school districts are loading up on iPads.

School districts like iPads because kids enjoy using that device. Thus, iPads are a motivational tool for content delivery. Kids could care less about the Kindle (i.e., the "old person's iPad").

I don't think so, Amazon is very good at adapting and quickly getting competitive in niches others have held for a long time. They have both low end and high end devices, and their price point is much better than Apple's. This will probably turn out to be another blow to Apple. Its much more likely you'll see an upgrade path for Amazon's products than affordable Apple products. Apple is past that phase anyway, they spent the 80s and 90s trying to hook people on their brand and now its the big blow off.

Why do schools need iPad? or Kindles? or Tablets?
