USG conference call (webcast and presentation): A coming labor shortage? Company brass suggests low availability of labor - contractors, drivers, laborers - as maybe being the top headwind to growth in 2013. Many in the business have moved on, and companies - not believing in the recovery - have been slow to hire. A drywall price hike is schedule for Jan. 1. Well, what does corporate america think is going to happen when they lay off everyone they can and outsource internationally, and then they expect their product demand to increase domestically? and if the value of your home equity is negative, such that people who have to pay their mortgage company to sell their house to move to a job, who has that amount of cash on hand without a job for the last several years? and if they do, do they have enough to move and rent until they find a job somewhere else?

And corporate america thinks that reducing manpower just makes the income statement more profitable?

Umm..the labor shortage is due to US heavily restricting immigration. Specifically, low skill immigration. It is possible that some of it is due to lack of labor mobility due to underwater mortgages, but at this point foreclosures are far off the record levels they have been at.

Labor shortage. Right. This is absolute BS. Drywalling is a trade skill, but the majority I've known that do this job barely have a high school education. Many can learn this trade with no problem, and quickly. What the company is really saying is that *cheap* drywallers can't be found.
