As Governor Mitt Romney rises in the polls, industry insiders say the odds for legislation making online gambling legal in some form trail off. Though Romney hasn't been specific, his comment that he wants to make the Internet "family-friendly" is viewed as an indication he opposes opening up online play for cash. In the meantime, most gaming firms have been aggressively hedging their bets with forays into social gaming and non-cash playing options as they plan for the eventuality of Internet gambling. The outlier: Las Vegas Sands (LVS -0.9%) sticks to its guns that the industry is far better off with the status quo.

Broader/easier online gambling may drive customers away from traditional casinos. However, the assumption is that traditional casinos would also take a stake in the business, perhaps bringing some "credibility" to online presence and make even more money in the end run.

LVS owner Sherman Adelson has donated millions to pro-Romney Superpacs. If Romney wins, expect LVS to have a lot of influence in this matter.

Sherman, Sheldon, whats in a name. Adelson and the rest of us want an economy with a little than the faint pulse we have now. Economic growth cures many ills. People who are out of work dont go to Vegas. A brisk US economy helps China; more people will go to Macau..

Romney is following the lead of one of his biggest contributors LVS CEO Sheldon Adelson. I'm surprised your article doesn't mention him. Adelson is looking for some serious favorable agreements with China through Romney since LVS has high stakes in Macau. Adelson stands to make billions with Romney as prez.

Adelson is looking for favors from Romney regarding relations with China since Adelson has big exposure in Macau. He will reap billions if Romney wins, making his millions given to Romney look like chicken feed. As of now, Romney wants China to stop keeping the price of the yuan down (as has Obama) which will end up making huge profits for Adelson.
