Shoppers will pay more for clothing next year as skyrocketing cotton prices force companies to take their chances in passing along price increases to consumers even as demand remains sluggish. Hanesbrands (HBI -1.4%), Jones Group and VF Corp. (VFC -0.4%) say they will raise prices for clothing set to hit stores early next year by as much as 10%.

no, no, no...haven't they listened to Bernanke? It's "deflation" we're fighting.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go blow my child's college fund on a gallon of milk and eggs.

Isn't this impossible? Haven't we been told repeatedly that we're in the midst of a huge deflationary threat?

Apparently, nobody has mentioned this threat to grocery stores, either.

Since housing is 40% of CPI and commodities (food and fuel ) are excluded you won't see it in the "official" CPI. Even if clothing increases by 10% next year it will have minimal impact on CPI because it is only a small portion of it. Plus, you can always make a "hedonistic adjustment" and switch to polyester.
We do have deflation in housing just not in anything else.
