DirecTV (DTV) launches a new channel with dedicated 24/7 coverage on Hurricane Sandy. The company has drawn praise in the past for its ability to adjust programming on-the-fly to breaking stories. The bigger issue: While keeping up with rivals with programming in the U.S. is necessary to maintain market share, in high-growth Latin America the company lacks high-tech cable competition and is looking at proprietary channels as a revenue driver.
